Unable to swim, he had been wading with members of his family. Sinking and never rising, Head's body was not recovered until 8 o'clock Sunday night when it was found with grappling hooks from the office of Sheriff Dean Rogers, in the channel of the river about 300 feet downstream from the point where he had disappeared. The chuck hole into which he had stepped was thirty-five feet in depth. The channel where his body was recovered was about fifteen feet deep. A crowd estimated at 100 persons gathered to watch and assist Sheriff Rogers and two deputies, Everett Marshall and Sam Martin, in the search. James Torsney provided a boat to aid in the search. Death of Head, a meat-cutter at the White House market, was the third by drowning in the Kaw in recent Sunday afternoons. Jackie Stewart, 9, of Richland, was drowned near Richland, July 12. William Frazier, 11, of route 2, was drowned June 14. Besides his widow, Head is survived by one daughter, Ilene, and five sons, Glenn, William, Herbert, Robert and Donald, all of the home address; one brother, Sgt. Joe Head, of Fort Sill, Okla.; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Pettingill and Mrs. Natalie Chapman, of Center, Colo. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10o'clock from Penwell's chapel, burial in Burlingame, Kan., cemetery.
