His son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. George Hargraves, Billings, Mont., arrived here this morning to be at his bedside, coming by car. Lead Daily Call, Wednesday, February 6, 1946, page 1: EARLY DAY RESIDENT OF THIS COMMUNITY DIES THIS FORENOON George Ward, 72 a resident of this community since 1900, died in St. Joseph’s hospital shortly before 10 o’clock this forenoon, as the outcome of a long period of failing health. He had been hospitalized most of the time during the past three months. The deceased is survived by four daughters, Mrs. James Giachetto, Lead; Mrs. Fred Simons, Beulah, Wyo.; Mrs. George Hargraves, Billings, Mont., and Mrs. Nick Percevich, Grass Valley, Cal. Several grandchildren, three sisters and a brother also survive. All of his daughters, with the exception of Mrs. Percevich, were at his bedside at the time of his death. The body is at the Rounsevell funeral home awaiting funeral arrangements which will not be made until word is received from the daughter living in California. The Rev. Frank Whitney, pastor of the local Methodist church, will officiate. Interment will be in the South Lead cemetery by the side of his wife who died in 1923. Lead Daily Call newspaper, Tuesday, February 12, 1946, Page 3: FUNERAL RITES FOR GEORGE E. WARD ARE HELD SUNDAY A large concourse of sympathizing friends of the late George E. Ward and of his family gathered in the chapel of the Rounsevell funeral home Sunday afternoon for funeral services conducted at 1:30 o’clock by the Rev. Frank Whitney of the Methodist church. The casket was surrounded with beautiful floral emblems. A choir from the Methodist church sang three hymns, “When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder,” “Vacant Chair” and “Will There Be Any Stars in My Crown.” Interment was in South Lead cemetery by the side of his wife and a daughter. The active escort was composed of the following group: O.E. Martin, Ed Simons, Joe Medak, Elmer Nelson, John Morgando and Matt Woods. An honorary escort included Louie Arpino, J.T. Martin, Russell Knox, Joe Steele, Alvin McCall and John Johnson. The deceased was born in Senora, Ill., October 23, 1874, and grew to manhood in his native state. He was united in marriage to Rhoda Martha Huff in Mt. Pleasant, Ia. in 1895. Ten years later they came to the Black Hills, settling at Hanna. He worked for the Homestake Mining company for some time, later entering the employ of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad as a section foreman. He retired in 1936 following a serious illness. Of the six children, five daughters and a son born to the couple, four daughters survive. They are Mrs. George M. Hargraves, Billings, Mont.; Mrs. Fred Simons, Beulah, Wyo; Mrs. James Giachetto, Lead, and Mrs. Nick Percevich, Grass Valley, Cal. Other survivors are nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren; a brother, Plenn Ward, Englewood; and three sisters, Mrs. William Emery, Whitetail; Mrs. C.C. Huff, Payette, Ida., and Mrs. George Esterbrooks, Pocatello, Ida. He was a member of the W.O.W. lodge. Mrs. Ward preceded her husband in death in 1923.
