George Floyd Cottrell married Mabel Inez Ure 03/25/1916. Six children were born to this marriage. Lenys Juanita Cottrell 11/27/1916, Elaine Carol Cottrell 04/05/1919, Cleo Margaret Cottrell 09/20/1920, Weston Floyd Cottrell 08/16/1923, Francis Mae Cottrell 01/20/1927 & Dixie Ann Cottrell 05/18/1927. Floyd as he was known farmed in the Fertile area until 1927 when he moved to Mason City, Iowa and was the Restaurant Manager at the Rock Island Railroad Depot until 1933. His wife Mabel died in 1931 and after escaping from the Cerro Gordo County jail in Mason City, Iowa, where he was being held on a 2nd bootlegging charge, he fled to the west coast working as a fruit tramp. George picked olives in California, cherries in Washington & apples in Montana & everything in between that was in season. Later in the 1940's he bought a small farm near Maple Plain, Minnesota and grew strawberries, sweet corn, tomatoes and such which he sold to local grocers and out of his road side stand. In the 1950's Floyd would make two trips a year to the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation with a truck load of goods that the Indians were in need of. Floyd had grown up on the border of the Reservation in from 1909-1913 on 160 acres that his father Delbert A. Cottrell homesteaded in 1910 and George had seen the Sioux Indian's hardships & living conditions on the Reservation. Floyd died 12/02/1960 of a heart attack near Fergus Falls, Minnesota after a day of ice fishing with friends.
