Description	:	George W. Seaman was born in Port Clinton, Ohio January 28, 1846, the son of Isaac N. and Julia A. (Hayes) Seaman. The Seaman family moved to Brown County Kansas in 1856, settling in the southern part of Lochnane Township, which is now part of Jackson County. The Seaman family moved to Brown County Kansas in 1856, settling in the southern part of Lochnane Township, which is now part of Jackson County. Their first home was a log cabin with a dirt floor and a blanket for a door. In 1862, when he was 16, George enlisted in Co. G, 2nd Nebraska, and saw 14 months of service against the Sioux Indians. Then, in 1863 he enlisted in the 4th Kansas Battery, along with his father and youngest brother, but was later transferred to the 16th Kansas Cavalry. He was mustered out on May 15, 1865. Then, in 1866, his father Isaac purchased land south of Claytonville (Brown County Kansas) and moved the family to their new farm. George married Anna E. Smouse (daughter of Samuel & Elizabeth Smouse) in 1871. To this union 6 children were born: Samuel, Julia B., Ella May, Pearl B, Frederick H., and Alfretta. In 1880 George and Anna moved their family to Colorado, where they lived for 13 years before returning to Brown County in 1893 to reside on the Seaman family farm. In 1902, George again moved his family, this time to Hiawatha, where he served as a deputy sheriff. Then in 1904, George was elected Sheriff of Brown County, and according to the minutes of the Brown County Commission meetings, he took office as Sheriff of Brown County in January 1905. Back then, elected terms for this office are believed to have been for two years, and George remained Sheriff until January 1909, when a newly elected Sheriff took office. During his first term, George's undersheriff was listed as S. I. Seaman. S.I. left the department in August, 1907, and a new undersheriff was named. In 1910, George was elected Probate Judge, and was re-elected to three additional terms. He was serving his fourth term at the time of his death. The following is an excerpt from his obituary printed in the November 8, 1918 Hiawatha Daily World: "Judge Seaman was affectionately called "Uncle George" by all acquaintances. He was greatly beloved. He was one the the kindliest and friendliest men, always ready to go to any length to help others. He was generous, almost to a fault. Brown County has never known a more popular man than Uncle George Seaman ...People all over Brown County feel they have lost a real friend..."
