Description	:	Gus Charles Martin Gus Charles was born August 28, 1879 in Homestead, Iowa to Gottlieb and Dorothy (Falkenhagen) Martin. He married Lula May, and later listed her as his nearest relative when he registered for the WWI draft September 12, 1918 in Harrison County, Iowa. Read More	Gus Charles Martin Gus Charles was born August 28, 1879 in Homestead, Iowa to Gottlieb and Dorothy (Falkenhagen) Martin. He married Lula May, and later listed her as his nearest relative when he registered for the WWI draft September 12, 1918 in Harrison County, Iowa. At the time he was working as a painter for the Chicago & North Western Railroad. The clerk noted that Gus was slender, of medium height, with brown eyes and "light" hair. In 1915, for the Iowa state census, Gus said his parents were both born in Germany, that he was farming, that he had completed the 8th grade, and that he was Lutheran. On April 2, 1942, he was living at 319 Lake St., Maywood, Illinois, working for the C & NW Railroad at their North Proviso Yards. That day he registered for the "older men's draft". The clerk noted that Gus was brown-eyed, with brown hair, that he was 5'7" with a ruddy complexion, and that Gus had a "bad thumb" on his right hand. He was still slender, weighing 129 lbs. After he retired, he continued living in Harrison County, in which he had resided 30 years. He died June 9, 1947 of a coronary occlusion.
