Cobbey -Born at Bellows Falls, Vt. Feb 26, 1827. Died at Denver, Col., Nov. 23, 1920. Age 93 years, 8 months, 27 days. Maiden name was Webb, being one of seven children of Hiram L. and Martha B. Webb who were pioneers of the State of Illinois, removing from their eastern home in 1834 and locating on what was then known as the Farmington prairie, Illinois. Here those hardy pioneers became owners of land by entry from the government and established a home and their descendants aided in the making of that, one of the most beautiful and valuable farming countries in the world. Here this estimable lady was reared to womanhood and here by her perseverance and great desire to obtain knowledge, made herself competent as a school teacher and in this way was able to assist her parents who were confronted with the many hardships incident to frontier life. The method of obtaining an education in those days from the crude system which then prevailed, and might be said to be in rough, differed very materially from the school advantages and methods of the present day, but it was just such pioneers as Mother Cobbey and those of similar kind, that made the present day methods possible. In 1848, she became the wife of Joseph E. Cobbey with whom she spent more than 56 years of happy wedded life. To them five children were born, two of whom died in infancy, the others, three sons grew to manhood, Joseph E. Jr., Thomas D. and James W., all of whom are or have been well acquainted in this county. Joseph E. Jr. came to this county, a young lawyer just from school in 1877. His career is well known in this community. He became the author of the well-known law textbooks on the subjects of Replevin and chattel mortgages and also became the revisor of our Nebraska statutes which became one of the best if not the best that Nebraska has ever had. He was also prominent in social, political and church life. Was an inveterate worker, overtaxed his physical and mental ability and died prematurely in Aug 1911. T.D.Cobbey came to Beatrice in 1875 and resided in this county until 1890 when he removed to Denver, Colo., where he is a prominent attorney. George W. resided here for a short time in the eighties and finally went west and took up residence in Denver and has been one of the trusted employes in the United States Mint for more than twenty years. The adult life of this grand woman was spent in four states. In Sterling, Illinois for about fifteen years, in Benton county, Ia from 1863 to 1885, 22 years and in this county 25 years and 9 years since 1911 in Denver, Colo. Early life she became a member of the M.E. church and has always been a devoted member thereof. Mrs. Martha Elliott, wife of J. Stewart Elliott is the only one of her grandchildren still living in this community. Besides Mrs.Elliott, there are twelve grandchildren and a large number of great-grandchildren residing in different states. The remains were laid to rest Friday afternoon in Evergreen cemetery, following services at the Methodist church. Beatrice, Ne Daily Sun Nov 27, 1920
