A celebration of her life will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, July 31, 2009, from the First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa, Iowa. A time of sharing and fellowship will be held immediately following the celebration in the First United Methodist Church fellowship hall. There is no public visitation. Frank, age 86, of Maquoketa, Iowa, died on Wednesday morning, July 29, 2009, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa, Iowa. A private family burial has taken place from the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, Iowa. Helen E. Simons was born on December 15, 1922 in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Dr. John Simons and Lillie (Morris) Simons. She was a graduate of Ottumwa High School and then received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, and her Master of Music from the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio. She also had additional hours from the University of Iowa. She married JJ Frank on June 16, 1948 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He preceded her in death on January 12, 1992. Helen taught music in the Preston Schools for two years and in the Maquoketa Community School District for 36 years. She also directed the First United Methodist Church choir for almost 30 years. Helen was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa, the Miriam Church Circle, and throughout the years had served on many church committees, including the church building committee. She also was a member of the Arts Committee of the Maquoketa Area Foundation and a former chairperson of that committee. She was a charter member of the Preceptor Xi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi of which she was president many times. She also was a member of the Chapter BX of PEO and Jackson County Historical Society, and a lifetime member of the National Education Association. She had been very active in the National and Iowa Music associations, including the Music Educators National Conference and the Iowa Music Educators Association of which she served on the state board for several years. In 1988, she received the Distinguished Service Award for the State of Iowa from the Iowa Music Educators Association. She also was listed in the Who's Who of Elementary Teachers and in 1985 was named one of Maquoketa's Outstanding Teachers. Helen enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, reading, and was an avid Cincinnati Reds baseball fan and Iowa Hawkeyes basketball fan. Helen is survived by a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim and Bernice Frank of Maquoketa, IA; a niece, Sandra Valbert Rockwell of Maquoketa, IA; and 2 great-nephews, Scott Valbert of Des Moines, IA, and Phil Valbert of OR. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to Hospice of Jackson County. "The family would like to extend a special thanks to the SNF/LTC unit at the Jackson County Regional Health Center for their love and excellent care and Hospice of Jackson County."
