Nieman, 86-year-old retired Leavenworth County farmer, died early Sunday at Cushing Memorial Hospital. A leg fracture, suffered in a fall a week ago at the home of a son, John, put him in the hospital and eventually proved fatal. Mr. Nieman was born in Leavenworth Jan 21, 1864. His parents were the late Martin and Elizabeth Schott Nieman, well know early residents. He moved to the Millwood community with his parents early in life, living there with them until his marriage April 10, 1890, to Miss Mary Schwettman at Millwood. He farmed near Millwood until 1895, when he and his wife moved to a farm a mile northwest of Potter, in Atchison County, In 1904 he bought a place a mile and a half west of Potter, where he lived until his retirement from active farming in 1920. He moved to Potter then, and lived to become the community's oldest, and probably best known, citizen. For years he had been a member of St. John's Lutheran Church 1-1/2 miles south of Potter. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary Nieman, of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Carrie Goff, 713 Miami; three sons, Albert Nieman, 701 Ninth Avenue; and Henry A. and John Nieman, both of Potter, and six grandchildren, Mrs. Bernard Herken, Richmond, Calif; Mrs. Betty Vornholt, 820 Ohio; Mrs. Arlene Barnett, Topeka; Mrs. Marlene Sullivan, Los Angeles, Cal.; Mrs. Alma Jean Naylor, 910 Dakota, and Earl Goff, Jr., Columbus, Ga. Four great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive. Published in the Leavenworth Times, January 15, 1951. Funeral services will be a 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at St. John's Lutheran Church near Potter. The Rev. E.L. Hofmann, the pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the family lot in the church cemetery. The body is at the Davis Funeral Church. It will be removed to church at noon tomorrow to await the hour of services.
