The services were conducted at Millwood, by the Rev. John Schmidt, the Lutheran minister, and interment was in the church burying ground. Martin Nieman died Monday, Dec. 22nd, at the home of his son, August Nieman, near Millwood. He had been ill for several months and for some time had been a patient in a Leavenworth hospital. Mr. Nieman was a native of Germany. He came to the United States in 1857 and worked for four years as a farm hand in Indiana. During the Civil war he enlisted in that state and served throughout the conflict in Company C of the Seventh Volunteer Infantry. In 1867 he came to Leavenworth county from Farley, Mo. At that time his neighbors remarked, "Well, Martin is going to Kansas to starve to death." He located on rented land near Millwood and experienced many difficulties, but three years later he purchased the farm where he lived many years. Three other farms were purchased later and he became known as one of the most prosperous farmers of the county. Mr. Nieman always took an active interest in G.A.R. affairs. Mr. Nieman's wife, who was Elizabeth Schott, died one year ago last May. Three sons, August, at whose home the death occured, Henry, a resident of Potter, and John, who lives on a farm in Easton township, and one daughter, Mrs. [Emma, married to Henry] Bente, wife of the nurseryman southwest of Leavenworth, survive him. One brother, Fred, who lives on Maple avenue, and one sister, Mrs. [Louise, widow of Henry] Hokamp, 615 Miami, twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive him. -- The Times.
