The men had come to town early in the day to make a delivery of hogs and had started for home seated high on the hog rack which was loaded with a consignment of telephone wire which they intended to distribute for the construction of a rural line. No 5 pulled by engine 1028, in charge of J Burkhardt, engineer, and George Dayton, was about five minutes late and running probably thirty miles an hour through town, giving the usual alarm whistles at the crossings. G I VanPelt, the only eye witness to the accident, was coming up town after supper and as he neared the railroad tracks he saw the train coming and at the same time saw the young men approach the crossing, singing or whistling, he does not remember which, but wholly unconscious of their danger. Mr VanPelt immediately realized the perilous position the men were in but was helpless to do anything, and before he could recover from his partial paralysis the inevitable crash had come and he next looked upon a scene of devastation so ghastly that it will not soon be blotted from his memory. Henry Hennis, the injured man, is a son of August Hennis, and made his home with his father on their farm three or four miles north of town. He is unmarried. The coroner was notified of the accident, but concluded that in inquest was not necessary and did not put in an appearance. The dead man was the son of Henry L Smith, one of the oldest and wealthiest farmers and most highly respected families in this county, and was past 35 years of age. He resided on the old homestead five miles north of town and had reach that time in life when he was beginning to live. He leaves an invalid wife and three children, the oldest of whom is barely eight years. Mrs Smith received the first news of the accident peaceably, although she was confined to her bed, but she was completely prostrated Tuesday afternoon when the lifeless body of her husband was taken home. Likewise,, Mrs H L Smith, the victim's mother, an aged woman, bore up marvelously well under the first information, but when she fully realized what had happened she broke down completely and is still almost distracted. Funeral services were held this morning at 10 o'clock at the Smith home and at 11 at the French Grove Lutheran Church. Deceased was a cousin of August Oehlsen, who met a similar fate in September last. December 4, 1902 State Center Enterprise.
