Description	:	Henry L Smith, one of the pioneer settlers in Marshall county, and one of the heaviest land owners in this community, died at Englewood hospital Friday afternoon January 13th, of cancer of the stomach, with which he had been suffering for more than a year. Read More	Henry L Smith, one of the pioneer settlers in Marshall county, and one of the heaviest land owners in this community, died at Englewood hospital Friday afternoon January 13th, of cancer of the stomach, with which he had been suffering for more than a year. He had submitted to an operation for the trouble on the forenoon before, but owing to the extent of the growth it was impossible to remove it. Mr Smith passed through the operation nicely, but his weakened condition prevented his recovery. At the time of his death Mr Smith was possessed of 600 acres of land in the vicinity of State Center, although this acreage had previously been divided among his children. Besides this and considerable personal property, he also owned 1,000 or more acres in South Dakota. Henry L Smith was born May 4, 1837 in Wenzen, Brunswick, Germany and would have been 74 years of age had he lived until the coming May. In the year 1856 he came to America and lived in Kendall and DeKalb counties, Illinois, for five years. When the civil war began he enlisted with the 86th Illinois volunteers and fought for the maintenance of the Union taking part in all the campaigns and all the battlers this regiment was called to engage in, in the battle of Chicamanga he was seriously wounded by being shot in the head and he always considered it miraculous that he survived. Just as miraculous was his escape from the enemy, because soon after the battle the rebels took possession of the battlefield, and captured a great many prisoners. In his wounded condition Mr Smith wandered about for seven days, finally reaching Nashville, Tennessee, where he received his first medical treatment. Here also he was given a leave of absence for two months and returned to Illinois. After the expiration of the furlough he again tendered his services to the Union, but on account of his physical condition he received an honorable discharge in the Marine hospital, Chicago. He never forgot his comrades with whom he wore the "Blue" and the scenes of his soldier life were so indelibly fixed in his mind that it was a treat to hear him relate them in the family circle at his fireside. In his spirit he seemed to again be at the "old fireside". In 1864 he came to State Center, settling in the French Grove settlement north of town, and where he established his home, which continued until his death. In the same year he was united in marriage to Miss Louisa Bodie, the ceremony being performed in the church which was erectedin the community in an early day and which is still in use. Mr Smith was a loving husband, a tender hearted father and a true friend. He was firm in his convictions and likewise fearless in expressing his opinion in matters in which he was consulted. Aside from this he was a devout churchman; one who believed the Bible to be the only reliable authority in religious matters and Christ Jesus, the "Rock of Ages" the cornerstone of man's salvation and at the same time the principal inspiration to a Christian life. In this spirit he was prominent in the organization of the French Grove Lutheran church and was ever ready with heart, head and hand to support and prosper all it's enterprise. Mr Smith was the father of six children. Two are dead, one daughter having died in infancy and a son Henry, having been killed on one of the railroad crossings in this place eight years ago. The children living with their mother are Louis and William A and Mrs Mary Boehm and Mrs Minnie Hartwig, all of whom have homes within a few miles of State Center. He is also survived by a half brother, August Armbrecht and lives north of town. Funeral services were conducted at the French Grove Lutheran church Tuesday noon, Rev A J Boehm, the pastor and son-in-law of deceased, officiating. Interment was made in the church yard. January 19, 1911 State Center Enterprise.
