Menke, pastor of the Presbyterian church, which had occurred during the night in his room in Hotel Goodwin. Mr. Menke's death was wholly unexpected. He had been seriously ill last spring and had undergone a surgical operation in the Presbyterian hospital in Chicago. Since that time he had not been in good health but had apparently been improving. About three weeks ago he returned to the hospital in Chicago for a further consultation with physicians, and on his return to Cassopolis last week he seemed very much improved. Saturday night he was taken ill by reason of a bowel stricture and on Sunday was in great pain and had a physician. He did not further require the services of a physician and desired to be alone, and as no one was with him during the night his death was not discovered until the following morning. His brother, J. F. Menke of Portsmouth, Ohio, came Tuesday to take charge of the remains. Brief services were held at the Presbyterian church and the remains were taken to Clatonia, Neb., where resides Mr. Menke's father, now in his eighty-fourth year. Deceased was fifty years of age. He had been pastor of the Presbyterian church here for more than a year past, and was highly esteemed, not only by the members of his congregation but by the public generally for his scholarly attainments and earnest Christian character".
