His headstone uses "Henry T. Adkins", and his three Jefferson county marriage records used "Henry" for the first name, with the 1916 marriage record to Emma Harvey McDonald using "Henry T. Adkins". However, it should be noted that two nearly identical obituaries published referred to him as "T. Henry Adkins.". Sigh. The headstone inscription uses 1860 for the birth year, while the obituaries stated that he was born on November 13, 1861. Not... Not sure how to reconcile that - will use November 13, 1860 pending any clarification. The DOB location was listed in two obituaries as Brookfield, Iowa, while another listed him as being born in St. Joseph, Mo. The Brookfield reference may have been an error - meaning Brookville, Jefferson county, Iowa. That said, not sure if born in Missouri or Iowa. Sigh. Will just use USA for the birth location for this memorial. ----------- Marriages: Henry was married four times, known of. His marriage to Nellie Harrison in 1894 was his second marriage per the marriage record. > First marriage: to whom and when, not known at this time. > Second marriage: Nellie Harrison (aged 19), Dec. 16, 1894 in Jefferson county, Iowa. > Third marriage: Eunice Schmidt (aged 22), March 7, 1910 in Jefferson county, Iowa. They were divorced on Sept. 14, 1910. Don't know what happened to her. > Fourth marriage: Emma Harvey McDonald (aged 57, at least a second marriage for her), December 24, 1917 in Jefferson county, Iowa. They were divorced on Nov. 3, 1920. Don't know what happened to her. Henry was buried in Old Fairfield City cemetery. Although his obituaries stated he was to be buried in Evergreen cemetery, these cemeteries are adjacent to each other and were often switched in obituaries (and some vital records). ------- Fairfield Weekly Ledger-Journal Thursday Aug. 30, 1920 Pg. 1 Col. 6 HENRY ADKINS PASSES AWAY Died this Morning At The Jefferson County Hospital; Funeral Saturday Henry Adkins died this morning at 9:30 oclock at the Jefferson county hospital after a short illness. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 oclock at the Christian church in charge of Rev. R. H. Polly. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery (sic). Mr. Adkins was born in St. Joseph, Mo. (sic ?? or Iowa) and has resided in this city for a number of years, having come here at the age of twenty seven. He has been employed at the Malleable Iron Works for the past 12 years. He leaves three sons, Harry and Earnest (sic. Ernest Charles) of this city and George of the Hawaiian Islands. Four sisters also survive: Mrs. Joseph Mulinix, Freesole, Mich. (Free Soil, MI?); Mrs. George Wilkinson, Camden Point, Mo.; Mrs. John F. He came to Fairfield with his parents in 1872 where he lived until his death. On December 16, 1894 he was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Harrison. To this union seven children were born. The mother an four children preceded him in death, three dying in infancy and one, Ben H. gave his life in the World War. He is survived by three sons, Harry and Earnest (sic. Ernest Charles) at home and George in the navy; also one grandchild and five sisters. For the past twelve years he was employed at the Malleable Iron Works. He was a member of the Christian church. Funeral services were held in the church Saturday afternoon at two oclock in charge of Rev. R. H. Polly. Polly. ------ Note: a son, Benjamin Harrison "Bennie" Adkins, had enlisted in Company M at Fairfield on May 1, 1918 to be part of the contingent of soldiers who wound up fighting in France. He died on September 12, 1918. A fellow soldier, 1st. Sergt. G. E. Sickler, found a blood-stained diary on the body of this young Adkins and kept it through the end of the war. Mr. Sickler returned to the United States and contacted Postmaster Dole to find a way to get this diary back to the Adkins family.
