San Bernardino Daily Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 14, last column Sun., Nov. 20, 1938 SUICIDE CLOSES PIONEER'S LIFE Apparently despondent over his health, Henry William Hawker, _(73) years old, Alta Loma citrus grower and earliest pioneer of the community, committed suicide at his home yesterday by carbon monoxide gas piped into his automobile, said Deputy Coroner William J. Weller. Hawker formerly lived in San Bernardino where he was in the construction business and had made his home at Alta Loma, at Highland and Ramona avenues, for the past 25 years. The body was discovered in the car in the garage by Mrs. Ma_ Greenan, a housekeeper, who became alarmed at his prolonged absence from the house. Hawker had gone into the garage Friday night or early Saturday. Placing a garden hose over the exhaust pipe, he fastened the other end in the car through a rear window and stuffed the cracks around the hose with rags, then started the motor. Hawker had been dead several hours when found, Weller said. Constable William Ruppe of Alta Loma assisted Weller in the investigation. The body was removed to Stone's mortuary in Upland. Hawker is survived by two sisters, Mrs. S. J. Delor of San Bernardino and Mrs. John Dodson of Colton. Officers said he committed suicide. The San Bernardino County Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 14, Tue., Nov. 22, 1938 ALTA LOMA, Nov. 21 – Funeral services for Henry William Hawker, pioneer Alta Loma citrus rancher, who committed suicide Saturday at his home, Ramona avenue and Nineteenth street, will be held tomorrow, 2 p.m., at the Stone mortuary, 329 East Ninth street, Upland. Mr. Hawker, who was 82 years of age, was born in San Bernardino county, in the Lytle Creek district, and had resided at the Nineteenth street address for 37 years. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Victor Delor, San Bernardino, and Mrs. John Dodson, Colton. Albert Hawker of Alta Loma and William Henry Hawker of Cucamonga are nephews and Mrs. Rose E. Hawker of Cucamonga is a niece. Bishop Frank Van Fleet of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will officiate at the funeral. Interment will be in Pioneer cemetery, San Bernardino.
