Spangler was born Sept. 19, 1859, in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, and died at his home in Hiawatha, Monday, Aug. 14, 1916. He studied for the ministry in a Lutheran seminary but finally chose the teaching profession rather than the ministry. He began teaching school when 16 years of age in his native state. He came to Kansas in the spring of 1882 and began teaching school the next fall at Green Door, in Brown county. He went to Hamlin in 1883 and taught there several years. In all he taught school many years in this county and was well known as a most successful educator. In his early manhood his health was poor and he worked as a brakeman on a railroad in Pennsylvania until he regained robust health. On Nov. 16, 1885, Mr. Spangler married Miss Orpha E. Berkley, of Hamlin, and one child was born to them. In his early youth he united with the Lutheran church and after coming to Kansas joined the Brethren church of which he has since been an active member. He was a member of the Masonic lodge at Hamlin and highly regarded by the Masonic fraternity. The disease which finally resulted in his death first made itself manifest five years ago and thru all these intervening years he was a great sufferer both mentally and physically. But his faithful wife and companion was constant both day and night in her care and devotion to his needs and comfort. Upon her the burden of care and responsibility rested heavily but she never failed or faltered, and all that a good wife and noble woman could do was gladly done to aid and relieve his suffering. He leaves a father, two brothers and two sisters in Pennsylvania. His father is 96 years old. A daughter, Miss Hazel, a public school teacher of promise, also survives him. A large number of sympathetic friends will mourn the departure of so strong and able a citizen from this community and county. -Fri Aug 18, 1916 Brown County World P.5 (Hiawatha, KS)
