Urbana Daily Times Citizen February 2, 1907 Mr. Taylor Journell and his sister, Mrs. George Kiser are home from Iowa City where they attended the funeral of their late uncle, Hiram Heath. The following obituary notice of Mr. Heath was written by a member of the family: Hiram Heath, the subject of this sketch was born in New Jersey on April 15, 1836 and died in Iowa City, Iowa on Jan 21st 1907 aged 70 years, 9 months and 6 days. When he was about 2 years old, he emigrated with his parents to Ohio, settling in Champaign County, where he resided until 1855 when he removed to Iowa, of which state he has been an honored citizen for more than half a century. He first settled in Iowa County for a short time whence he removed to his farm in Lincoln Twp, Muscatine county where he lived till the year 1891, when he moved to Iowa City where he resided to the end of his days. In the year 1861 he was married to Miss Flora Taylor of Champaign County, Ohio, sister of the late John and Archibald Taylor and of Mrs. Crockett Journell, deceased, all of Champaign County. Of this union were born four children, son Mack, who died a number of years ago; & 3 daughters Mrs. T.E. Fountain of Ladora, IA, Mrs. O.R. Reeves of Muscatine Co and Mrs. F.W. Boots of Hanover Illinois, all of whom with the mother are living. The confidence and esteem in which Hiram Heath was held by his fellow citizens is attested by the fact that for 37 years he was secretary of the Lincoln Mutual Ins. Co. and was prominently identified with various other companies. As a member of the 35th IA Vol. Infantry he served in the civil war with courage and fidelity till failing health compelled him to return home. As an individual, Hiram Heath was a man of well defined characteristics, positive in his opinions, pronounced in his likes and dislikes, uncompromising in his ideas of honor, he met in unusual completeness the exacting requirements that go to make up a manly man, a loving husband and considerate father, a faithful friend, he was loved and honored by all who came within the charmed circle of his favor, a model citizen, a desirable neighbor and a reliable business man. He merited and received the university confidence and esteem of his fellow men. Of Hiram Heath may be truthfully spoken that euology of eulogies: "He was a good man."
