Just before Christmas Howard's parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Bowman, received a telegram from the war department stating their son was missing. Another wire Tuesday advised them that their son, Howard Bowman, a member of the crew of the U. S. S. Arizona, had been officially declared lost by the U. S. Navy. The telegram reads as follows: Washington, D. C. Jan. 20, 1942 Dennis Bowman, Coon Rapids, Iowa. 'After exhaustive search it has been found impossible to locate your son, Howard Alton Bowman, Seaman Second Class, U.S. Navy and he therefore has been officially declared to have lost his life in the service of his country as of Dec. 7, 1941. The department expresses to you its sincere sympathy.' Rear Admiral Randall Jacobs Chief of Bureau of Navigation. Howard Alton Bowman, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Bowman, was born at Lang, Saskatchewan, Canada, Sept. 29, 1919 and moved to Coon Rapids with his parents in the fall of 1921. He attended the local schools and took an active part in school activities. He was a member of the glee club, the mixed chorus, the boys' quartet, played football, and baseball and graduated in 1939. The first of March the following year he attended linotype school at Charles City and that summer enlisted in the United States Navy. He left Coon Rapids Sept. 15, 1940 for his six weeks training period at Great Lakes Naval Training Station and was home on furlough at Thanksgiving that same year. Immediately upon completing his training period he was sent to Bremerton, Wash., and assigned to the U. S. S. Arizona. A good sailor, he liked the service and wrote many interesting letters to home folks.
