October 12, 1964 (excerpts from Plattsmouth Journal) Funeral services were held at Caldwell Funeral Home today for Howard F. "Hob" Hirz, 47, lifelong resident of Plattsmouth and former City Councilman and head of several local organizations. He died Thursday, October 8th of a heart attack near Elk Point SD on the Missouri River while on duty with the Army Corps of Engineers as a crew member of the launch "Sioux City". Hob had worked for the Corps of Engineers for about three years. Prior to that he was associated with the Cass Theater and the Bowlero bowling alley in Plattsmouth. He was born February 7, 1917, Plattsmouth, son of Fred J. and Lulu E. Blotzer/Blatzer Hirz. He was married to Geraldine Griffin September 4, 1938 Plattsmouth. Survived by wife Geraldine along with daughter, Nancy, San Francisco; son, Tommy, at home; his mother, Lulu; sister, Mrs. Robert Slavicek, Plattsmouth; and brother, Robert, Plattsmouth. Hob was a member of the Presbyterian Church; Lodge No. 6, A. F. and A. M.; Royal Arch Masons No. 3 and Mt. Zion Commandery No. 5, Knights Templar. He served on the City Council three terms, was past president of the Plattsmouth Volunteer Fire Dept., past president of the Rotary Club and past commander of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Hob was a veteran of the Marine Corps, 5th Division. He entered service in 1943 as a member of the 5th Division. He landed with the assault on Iwo Jima in 1945 and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic action in February that year. After two years in the South Pacific, he was discharged from service in 1946.
