His parents were farmers, and Hugh learned to know animals at an early age. At the time of the 1900 US Census, the family was farming in Union Township, Harrison County, Iowa. Jul. 1894, IA On June 5, 1917, a 23 year old, tall, slender young man with blue eyes and brown hair walked into the World War I registration office. He explained that he had been a student of veterinary medicine for one year at an Iowa college, and was a Private in the Infantry for the Cadet Corps at his college. He did go to fight in WWI. Later, when he was 47, gray-haired, weighing 160 lbs. and 5'10½", with a ruddy complexion and blue eyes, the clerk noted that an identifying mark was a bullet wound in the end of the last rib on the right side. By that time, he was self-employed as a veterinarian, with offices at 118 North 5th St. in Missouri Valley, Iowa. On September 13, 1919, Hugh C. Fitch, 25, married Christine M. Stevens, 20. She had been born in Pottawattamie County, Iowa to JJ and Nellie (Van Cleve) Stevens. It was a first marriage for both. They had been living in Missouri Valley, and Rev.
