The entire community of Rockville was greatly shocked Tuesday evening by the announcement that Mr. Ignatius D. Blunt has been drowned in the Patuxent river, near Tridelphia, about 10 o’clock that day. Mr. Blunt, in company with a number of friends, had gone to the river early in the morning for the purpose of fishing with a seine, and while operating the same he slipped into a deep washout near the shore and sank to the bottom. Every effort was made to secure him by his companions, but when his body was reached life was found to be extinct. It is not known whether he was attached with cramp or became entangled in roots at the bottom of the river, which prevented his coming to the surface. At the time of his death he was in the twenty-seventh year of his age, and was well and favorably known, not only in his native county, but throughout this and adjoining States. At the last annual meeting of the Agricultural Society he was elected president of the same, and has shown great interest in the coming September exhibition. He cultivated a large farm in the vicinity of Goshen, and had herds of pure bred Jersey and Guernsey cattle, second to none in this section of the State. For several years past he had regularly visited all this State and also in Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey and other states, and had been awarded thousands of dollars in premiums on his cattle. He was a young man of great business attainments and much energy, and his loss will be deeply felt in the community in which he lived. He was a single man and leaves a large number of relatives in Montgomery county and the District of Columbia. Mr. H.B. Cramer, of Washington, formerly of Frederick, who was personally acquainted with Mr. Blunt in describing his sad death says: “Mr. blunt, Walter Mobley, Crammer Griffith and Harry Dorsey went seining in the Patuxent creek, near the Hollins River Church, not far from Layton’s mills. They came to a deep place, which they all were aware of, and Blunt tried to pass it and was taken down. He came up several times but could not be saved. Mobley jumped in and caught him by the hand but he got away from him in his struggles. His body was recovered sometime afterward. It has cast quite a gloom over the neighborhood, as he was very much liked by everybody. He was President of the Montgomery County Agricultural Society and was very energetic in securing attractions for the fair this fall. He studied law but am not sure whether he was even admitted to the bar or not. He was quite a society man and was very well known in Frederick. His full name was Ignatius Dorsey Blunt, and he will be buried Thursday, at 8 o’clock a.m., from his late home “Woodburne,” near Goshen, Montgomery county.” [The News, Frederick, MD, 11 Aug 1892]
