Description	:	Ione O. Hopkins, 89, of Laurens, passed away Friday, March 23, 2007, at the Pocahontas Community Hospital, Pocahontas. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 26, 2007 at the First Christian Church, Laurens, with the Rev. Sara Galindo officiating. Burial will be in Laurens Cemetery near Laurens. Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, March 25, 2007, at the Smith-Loterbour-Powers Funeral Home, Laurens with an Eastern Star Service at 6 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home. Ione Opal Backstrom was born April 11, 1917, near Curlew, Iowa. She was the daughter of Alof A. and Anna (Eklund) Backstrom. She attended country school and graduated from Mallard High School in 1934. On November 27, 1935, Ione married D. Garth Hopkins at Mallard. The couple farmed near Mallard and Curlew. They lived in Texas for several years in the late 1940's and then returned to the Laurens area to farm. In 1960, they moved into Laurens and operated the Laurens Reminder. Ione worked as a housekeeper at the Laurens Good Samaritan Center from 1974 until retiring in 1982. Garth passed away in 1993 and Ione continued to reside in her home until January of 2006 when she moved to the Good Samaritan Center. Ione was a member of the First Christian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed gardening and she especially enjoyed spending time with her grand and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her daughters, Janice Stover of Pocahontas and Garthlene (Rodney) Bell of Laurens; sons, Garold "Tex" (Leoma) Hopkins and Randy (Joann), all of Laurens; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Ione was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Garth; five brothers, Rueben, Elmer, Milford, Clifford and infant Melvin Backstrom; and three sisters, Alice Birchard, Esther Kendall and infant Mabel.
