He was born in Shenandoah Valley, CA on November 17, 1926 to the late Phydella (Brown) and Berthal Crain. Jack was fourth generation, who grew up in Shenandoah Valley and spent most of his years farming it. Read More	Jack Arthur Crain Sr., of Plymouth, CA, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at the age of 91. He was born in Shenandoah Valley, CA on November 17, 1926 to the late Phydella (Brown) and Berthal Crain. Jack was fourth generation, who grew up in Shenandoah Valley and spent most of his years farming it. He was a true outdoorsman and started farming when he was 9 years old raising sheep and driving tractor for his dad. He and his brother, Leslie, started their own egg and chicken business as young men. Jack also raised turkeys. He was known for his hard work and grew wine grapes, prunes, and walnuts, and enjoyed fishing in his spare time. He was a man with great integrity, and was proud of his heritage. He attended Shenandoah Valley Elementary School then Sutter Creek High School. In high school he raised turkeys, and held the titles of State Officer of FFA, Student Body President, and football player, before graduating in 1944. He then joined the U.S. Army and served in the 11th Airborne Division as a paratrooper and member of the band after the end of WWII, where he earned the rank of Sargent. “I’ve been up in an airplane seven times but never landed,” he would say. When he returned home, he married Dena Battaglia from Amador City, and his second marriage was to Ruth French, at St. Mary of the Mountains Catholic Church in Plymouth, CA. Together, Jack and Ruth owned and operated Crain’s Market in Sutter Creek for seventeen years. He was hardworking and thrifty, and enjoyed helping others. He loved his family dearly, and looked forward to family events, taking pictures, and playing cribbage with his grandchildren. He was loved and admired by his family, and at Thanksgiving, Jack was the family turkey carver. Jack is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Ruth (French) Crain, ,of Plymouth, CA; two daughters, Carol Sleeper and her husband Bob, of , Shenandoah Valley, CA, and Gloria Adkins and her husband Cory, of Jackson, CA; son, Jack Crain Jr. and his wife Donna, of Lodi, CA; three step-daughters, Janet Parker, of Shenandoah Valley, CA, Karen Martin and her husband Mike of Shenandoah Valley, CA, and Jeanne Meyer, of Plymouth, CA; twelve grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leslie Crain and Everett Crain; and step-son, Bob Upton. Jack was laid to rest at Shenandoah Valley Cemetery. Contributions in his name may be made to the Native Daughters Forrest Parlor #86, 11190 Shenandoah Rd., Plymouth, CA 95669.
