Description	:	Son of Thomas Fountain and Christianna Streets Fountain. Jacob S. Fountain was born of English parents in New Castle County, Del., April 2nd, 1817. Left an orphan in early life, he learned the harness trade. In 1839, after varying trials, he opened a harness shop in Cincinnati, Ohio. That was 72 years ago, in President Van Buren's administration. The years of his life since then have been fraught with such a wide range of experience and usefulness as come to few men. Fountain was born of English parents in New Castle County, Del., April 2nd, 1817. Left an orphan in early life, he learned the harness trade. In 1839, after varying trials, he opened a harness shop in Cincinnati, Ohio. That was 72 years ago, in President Van Buren's administration. The years of his life since then have been fraught with such a wide range of experience and usefulness as come to few men. They were the great, eventful of our national life. In them he saw three great wars, the Mexican, the Civil and the Spanish wars, and felt most deeply their national importance. In 1855 he bought a home in the west, coming over the Mountains on the old Baltimore & Ohio canal, first in Kansas, later in St. Joe, Mo., then in 1857 he came to Council Bluffs, Ia. Returning to Cincinnati for his family, he came back in a covered wagon drawn by an ox team, as thousands of families were then doing, later he sold his claim and came up to Cincinnati Twp., which has since been his home. In 1845, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he took to wife, Miss. Althalinda B. Cook, who shared all his fortunes and all his hardships, till her death April 6, 1910. To them eight children were born of whom six are still living; namely, Mary E. Blackburn, William M., Andrew N., Charles A., Rachel O. Finley and Anna L. Webb. Mrs. America Lake died a few years since and Jacob Jr. died in infancy.
