Description	:	James came to America when he was 16 years of age. For some time he lived with a brother in Boston. At an early stage of the Civil War James enlisted as a Private on 24 Jun 1861 at the age of 26. He was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska. He mustered in Co F 1st Nebraska Infantry on 24 Jun 1861 and was promoted to Full Corporal on 1 Jan 1862. James transferred to Co F 1st Nebraska Cavalry on 6 Nov 1863. At an early stage of the Civil War James enlisted as a Private on 24 Jun 1861 at the age of 26. He was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska. He mustered in Co F 1st Nebraska Infantry on 24 Jun 1861 and was promoted to Full Corporal on 1 Jan 1862. James transferred to Co F 1st Nebraska Cavalry on 6 Nov 1863. Promoted to Full Sergeant on 1 Dec 1864. He received a disability discharge on 16 Dec 1865 as a Full Sergeant. After his discharge, he settled down in Sidney and married Emma Fletcher on 4 Apr 1871. They had four children: Otis, Curtis, Nellie and Daniel. James was a well know figure in Sidney, having spent all his married life there. He was a section foreman for the railroad and his home was close to the train depot. He was a member of the G.A.R. posts of Sidney, and also a member of the order of Free Masons. James died at the age of 68 years. He had been sick for three weeks as a result from a strain in the back in the effort of lifting a hand-car.
