Description	:	James was born in Illinois in 1846 the second of eleven known children of John Tipton Whitman b. Indiana in abt. 1824 and Rebecca Jane Reneau b. Penn. abt. 1826. His siblings were: Wm. R. b. abt. 1843, Sarah A. b. abt. 1849, Nancy J. b. abt. 1851, twin brothers, John F. and Jonathan M b. abt. 1854, Mary E. b. abt. 1856, Francis J. b. abt. 1858, Martha, b. abt. 1859, and Angeline b. abt. 1861. The family lived in Indiana and Illinois. James inlisted in the Illinois infantry as a private and fought for the Union in the... The family lived in Indiana and Illinois. James inlisted in the Illinois infantry as a private and fought for the Union in the Civil War. His tombstone was erected as tribute to a veteran of the war. On 29 Mar. 1866, James married Mary Adeline(Addie) Alexander b. 1848 in Missouri, in Clay Co. Ill. They had eight children: Effie Jane b. 01 Aug 1867, Wm. Asa b. 04 Feb. 1869-10 Apr. 19, Cassius "Cash" Newton b. 16 Apr. 1871-1936( wife was Ida M. and they lived in Grant Co. Neb.), Edney Alice, b. 25 Nov. 1873, Hershel, b. abt. 1876, Lula Angie b. 12 Aug. 1878, James Ernest "Ernie", b. 9 Mar. 1881 and Joseph Franklin, born 12 Nov. 1882( He died in Bremerton, Washington in Apr. 1982). All their children were born in Missouri. The family lived in the Maryville, Mo. area where James farmed. In 1880 the family was living in Union Twp., Nodaway Co. and on 15 Aug. 1882, at about age 36, James passed away suddenly. Addie Whitman married again, to Samuel Gonser and had four more children, all of whom moved to Washington State.
