Description	:	James Russell Bailey, son of Elmer Melton Bailey and Lizzie Aletha (Eby) Bailey, was born December 27, 1907 at Elk Falls and passed from this life at his home on October 23 at the age of 70 years, 9 months and 26 days. The death was caused by stroke rather than heart attack as previously reported. He grew up in the Havensville area where he accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior at 14 years of age. James was married to Susie Evelyn Chance on June 26, 1929 in the Soldier Christian parsonage by Rev. Mayfield. James was married to Susie Evelyn Chance on June 26, 1929 in the Soldier Christian parsonage by Rev. Mayfield. To this union was adopted one son, Ray Melton Bailey, and the family lived in the Soldier-Havensville area until moving to Holton 21 years ago. James farmed for 25 years and after moving to Holton he worked in Topeka at the Topeka Millwork Company and in Holton at the Padden Furniture and Leepers Hardware stores. He was a faithful member of the First Christian church in Holton where he had served as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, chairman of the World Outreach committee, chairman of the Elders and chairman of the official board. This past September, James qualified for his 23rd year Sunday school attendance pin. He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant sisters and five infant brothers. James is survived by his wife, Susie Bailey of Holton, his son Ray and daughter-in-law Gwen Bailey of 1101 Woodward, Topeka; and his five grandchildren, all of Topeka. He is also survived by one brother, Roy Bailey of Belvidere, Illinois, and by five sisters; Evelyn Talbot of Mountain Home, Arkansas, Mabel Douglas of Chanute, Elsie Chance of 9227 N. US-75, Topeka, Kathryn Hladky of Soldier, Dorothy Baker of Orville, California and by a host of nieces and nephews and friends. Services were conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 26 in the First Christian church by Rev. Edward Moore. Pallbearers were Jesse Sorensen, Perry Davis, Harlan Fisher, LeRoy Burget, Melton Myers, Gale Pfister. Flower ladies were Hazel Sorensen and Effie Moody. Burial was in Holton Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to First Christian church, Holton. Mercer Funeral Home in Holton is in charge of arrangements.
