Description	:	James S. Neel was the third child born to John William and Elizabeth (Sanders) Neel in Vermillion County, Indiana. His mother died seven days after his birth. His father remarried and had eight more children. In the 1860 U.S. Census he is 8 years old and living with his Sanders grandparents in Vermillion Indiana. His mother died seven days after his birth. His father remarried and had eight more children. In the 1860 U.S. Census he is 8 years old and living with his Sanders grandparents in Vermillion Indiana. In the 1870 US Census he is 18 years old and living with a cousin, George Pinegar, in Vermillion, Indiana. On March 1, 1871, James married Angelina Laura Goff in Vermillion, Indiana. Their first son, John William, was born in Vermillion, Indiana, but shortly after they began to migrate west. Their next two children were born in Fillmore, Nebraska. By 1877 the young family had homesteaded in Sibley Township, Cloud County, Kansas. Over the years James would add to this original homestead, purchase a half-section in Thomas County and a farm in Mitchell County. He loved fast horses and seldom turned down a good race. At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, eight children, 32 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was a kind and loving husband and father. He was a home-loving man and had great faith in and toward all mankind. He hoped and believed in the future life. The Kansas, Jamestown, KS 18 Sep 1919: PIONEER DIES SUDDENLY - While James S. Neel of Sibley Township was driving a team to town last Saturday afternoon accompanied by his wife he died very suddenly supposedly from heart failure. Mrs. Neel noticed that the lines slackened over the dashboard and she spoke to her husband to tighten up his lines when he suddenly fell over onto her lap and expired without a word. Mr. Neel had lived in this county since 1877 and was noted for years for his interest in fine stock and fast horses. He enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all who knew him and in all his dealings with his fellow men was straight as a string. He is survived by his wife and eight children: Mrs. Emma Sears of Hunter, OK; Mrs. Maude Cook of Delphos, KS; John W. Neel of Cady, TX; Henry Neel of Pauls Valley, OK; James F. Neel of Clovis, NM; Claude Neel of Cloud County, KS; and Joseph S. Neel of Concordia, KS.
