I was Rose Lucy Frances Dennington, born on September 10, 1892 in London, England. My mother died when I was a small girl, so I was raised by an aunt in Hampshire and came to Canada in 1913 at 20 years of age. I worked as a practical nurse for people in Edmonton, Alberta and Ardrossan. It was when I was a bridesmaid for a friend tat I met my husband who was Best Man for the Groom. We were married at Christ Church, in Edmonton in 1915 - May 26. Life on the homestead was quite different from England and I had never seen snow before coming to Canada. When I first went out on the homestead there were no fences and the wild pasture was very lush. I used to walk miles to find the milk cows at night and the horses in the morning. We got our first cows fromMr. Tom Meeklen who ran the lumber yard in Onoway. In 1923, my husband went to Moosomin, Sask. and bought a small herd of pure-bred Ayreshire cows and heifers. He took great pride in his cows and entered them at surrounding fairs. We were the first people to ship cream into Edmonton from here, and later a creamery was built in Onoway where we took our cream. I remember coming to the farm on the first train leaving Edmonton for Onoway after the railroad had come through. We left the city at 8 a.m. and arrived at Onoway at 12 noon, a distance of about 25 to 30 miles. Something kept breaking on the train, so the passengers would get off and pick wild flowers and fruit along the track. Our first home was built of squared logs and my husband built table, chairs and bed. We heated and cooked with wood which I sawed by hand with a cross-cut saw. It took me some time to get in the way of making decent bread. I was young and strong and didn't mind the hardships. I remember the neighbors as kind, helpful people. We had no real roads, just trails through the bush. We were short of water on our farm and had to get it from springs and creeks. In all, seven wells have been dug on our farm. It wasn't till the last one was drilled that we struck a really good well. I had a little pig given to me once. It became a pet and followed me everywhere, even when I walked to the post office. One Sunday we all went visiting and my pig was nowhere to be found when we came home. It was quite late by then and we never did find out what became of it. We lost our first house by fire, so my husband bought B.C. lumber from Onoway and built a new house. The neighbors helped us out too. My husband was a Master Carpenter by trade. My husband cut and sold mine props in the winter and sold wood by the cord to the Onoway Creamery, the hospital and the Speldhurst School, and hauled wood to private homes in Edmonton. We had five horses but very little machinery so used to borrow from the neighbors and pay back in work. My husband received some money when his mother died, then bought some second hand machinery. There were dances and picnics but I was always too tired from the work to attend them. The children took much of my time as well. We had five, Lucy Mary; Catherine Margaret; William Edmund; Kenneth James, Flora Annie and Harry Keith. When the second Speldhurst school was built on the CPR quarter my husband owned at the time, our children did the sweeping, dusting, carried in the wood and coal, and made the fires. Since the school was only a quarter of a mile away, the water was carried from our place. My husband passed away on Dec. 9, 1946. Since then, my son Billy farmed the home place and acquired the Vipan quarter for himself. He never married so we carried on together until his death in June 1969.
