Read More	Jan Nepomucene Nechanicky was born on October 14, 1847, the youngest child of Frantisek and Alzbeta (Janasek) Nechanicky, in Dobrkov, district of Chrudim, Bohemia (a part of Austria at that Catholic church just across the street from his home. His patron saint, St. John Nepomucene, a priest, had served a parish in the city of Pargue and was tortured and drowned upon orders of King Wenceslaus IV when he refused to divulge the queen’s confession. Thus he is known as the “Martyr of the Confessional.” When John was about 1-1/2 years of age his mother died, leaving 5 young children in the family. The oldest, Katerina, was almost 12 years old; and it has not been determined if she took over the household duties, if Frantisek married a second wife, whom cared for the children until they became adults. According to the 1900 Federal Census, John immigrated to America in 1871 at age 24, coming to Tama Co., Iowa, where previously relatives had settled. He applied for citizenship on October 16, 1875, and was naturalized on February 23, 1878, in the Tama Co. District Court. He worked for 5years in north Tama as a farm hand and then invested in 80 acres of land in Section 20, Carroll Township. John Nepomucene Nechanicky, was born October 14, 1847, in Dobrkov village in the region of Chrudim, Bohemia, 75 miles East-Southeast of Prague. He was the youngest child of Frank and Elizabeth (Janasek) Nechanicky, others being Katerina and Josef, both of whom married and remained in Bohemia; also Mary Magdalena, born 1843, who immigrated to Tama County about 1863, married Samuel M. Kupka, and settled on a farm in York Township. A brother, Frank, born 1845, married Magdalena Horacek, in Bohemia, and immigrated to Tama County in 1885, with their 15 year old daughter, Marie A., who married Anton Kubik in 1887, and first settled on a farm south of Clutier. Four children of Josef also immigrated to Tama County in the late 1800's: Joseph who married Helena Podhajsky and lived on a homestead near Odessa, Washington; Frances who married John Benesh and farmed near Estherville in Emmet County, Iowa; Anna who married Fred Hanus, a former Carroll Township school teacher, and settled near Riverside, California; and Frank who married Jennie Staricky and farmed near Ellendale, Minnesota. When John Nepomucene was about one and one half years of age, his mother died. In 1871 at age 24, he came to Tama County, and on March 4, 1878, was married at Chelsea by Father John F. Zlebcik to Frances J. Yuska, daughter of Vit and Katerina (Odehnal) Yuska. She was born February 12, 1856, at Bela in the region of Chrudim, Bohemia. Her parents and their children immigrated to Tama County about 1870. Their other surviving children were: Barbara who married Frank Rayman, Anna and John who remained single, Vencil who married Mary Novotny, and Joseph who married Katherine Pokorny, all settling in Tama County. John and Frances began married life on their 80 acre farm in Section 20 of Carroll Township where eleven children were born to them, seven surviving to adulthood. In 1902, the family moved to a farm in Section 17, of Geneseo Township, to be nearer Frances brother, Vencil, and family. Here Frances died on May 25, 1906 of heart disease and tuberculosis. When their son, William B., was married to Marie E. Stodola in 1911, ownership of the Geneseo farm was transferred to them; and John with his remaining unmarried children moved to the old "Bunker" farm which he purchased in Section 14, Perry Township, two miles southeast of Traer. This was his residence when he was run over by a wagon drawn by a team of runaway horses, suffering fractured ribs and hip. He died a few weeks later on July 30, 1916, at the age of 68 at the residence of his niece, Marie A. (Nechanicky) Kubik, who had nursed him since the accident. John and Frances were buried at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery near Clutier. Between 1915 and 1920, five members of their immediate family died, several as a result of tuberculosis. John was a very congenial person and also a very devout Catholic. He had a special prayer book from which he presented readings at certain religious events, including funerals. His patron saint was St. John Nepomucene, a priest who had served a parish in the city of Prague, and was known as the "Martyr of the Confessional." - by Cecelia N.
