Yuska was born on February 12, 1856, at Bela, district of Chrudim, Bohemia, to Vit and Katerina (Odehnal) Yuska, spending her early years in that area. Her parents and most of their children sailed from Bremen, Germany, on the S.S. Republic, and landed in New York City on June 20, On March 4, 1878, she married John Nechanicky, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Father John F. Zlebcik at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Chelsea, Iowa. They began their married life on John’s farm in Carroll Twp., where 11 children were born, four of whom died in their youth. On March 14, 1902, John and Frances acquired and moved to a farm in Section 17, Geneseo Township, from Mr. and Mrs. Hans Knoop. They wished to be nearer Frances’ brother, Vencil Yuska, and family who lived in nearby Buckingham Twp. The farm in Geneseo Twp. was earlier owned by Andrew McElhinney and was the farm on which Joseph and Helen (Podhajsky) Nechanicky resided for a time around 1892. Joe worked as a hired man for the owner a that time, and they resided in a mall tenant house on the south side of the road, where their daughter, Mary Helen Nechanicky, was born. Frances died on this farm on May 25th, 1906, at the age of 50 of heart trouble, having also suffered for some time with tuberculosis. When their son, William, was married on February 21, 1911, to Marie E. Stodola, ownership of the farm was transferred to them, the deed having been filed March 6, 1911. John, with those children still at home—John, Stella, Joseph, and Fred—moved to the old “Bunker” farm which he bought in Section 14, Perry Twp., two miles southeast of Traer. This was his residence when he was run over by a wagon drawn by a team of runaway horses on July 8, 1916, suffering a fractured hip and ribs. He died July 30 at age 68 at the residence of his niece, Marie A. Kubik, who had nursed him since the accident. Both John and Frances were buried at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Carroll Twp., Tama County, near Clutier, Iowa. There was sometimes known as John H. Nechanicky. He was a very congenial person and had a special Catholic prayer book from which he made readings at certain religious events, including funerals and weddings. There was much tragedy in this family in the five years between 1915 and 1920, five members of the immediate family having died; Stella in 1915; Fred in early 1916; John, the father, also in 1916; Frank in 1918; and John, Jr., in 1920. The son, William, was the only one in the family who produced male offspring to carry on the Nechanicky name in this particular line.
