Mrs. Wearing passed away June 11, 1969, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs. She had been in a coma since a fall at her home the week before. She was born December 6, 1901 in Malvern, the daughter of William and Gertrude Wortman. She graduated from Malvern High School in 1920, and began her health care career in 1924, after earning a degree from Nebraska Westeyan University in Lincoln. She enrolled in the Edmundson Hospital School of Nursing, completing the course in 1937. After working as a nurse in Council Bluffs, Wausa, Wisconsin, and Birmingham, Alabama, she returned in 1936 to Jennie Edmundson and was shortly named director of the school of nursing. She later earned a master's degree in hospital administration at Columbia University in New York in 1948. She was director of the school of nursing at Edmundson from 1949-1963. Jessie married J. F. Wearing on January 10, 1953, and she retired from the school, but continued as a member of the board of directors from 1935-1970. After the death of her husband in 1971, she was school nurse for the Malvern Community School for 10 years, until she retired again at the age of 82 in 1964. She was a member of the American Nurses Association, the Iowa Nurses Association, and a charter member of the Glenwood chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. Survivors include two brothers, W. Perry Wortman, and wife Marjorie of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Allen Wortman and wife Zelma of Malvern, two stepsons, Josiah Wearing Jr and wife Mary Louise of Hastinas and Edward Wearin and wife Helen of Red Oak; and many step grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Bill Gilbert was the organist at the funeral services. Pall bearers were Josiah C. Wearin, Leo Smith, Bryon Salmon, Andy Wearin, William A. Wortman, Lyle Treese, Booke Sloss, and William P. Wortman III. Mansfield Hertz Funeral Home of Malver was in charge of the arrangements.
