WEARIN LONG-TIME RESIDENT OF MALVERN AREA The death of Josiah Foster Wearin, which occurred September 25, 1971, took from the community a man whose broad public interest had affected almost every facet of his life in this era. The son of Adelbert Josiah and Mary Louise Foster Wearin, he was born September 30, 1896 in Mills county and lived his entire life in the Hastings and Malvern communities. As a boy and a young man he assisted his father in the operation of their homestead farm which had been taken up by his grandfather, Josiah Wearin in 1854. He attended Malvern High School graduating in 1903 when it was still housed in the old Academy building on north Marion ave. He also attended Iowa State College where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. He was married to Ethel Anderson of Red Oak, September 12, 1912 and they established their home in Malvern. They were parents of two sons, Josiah Foster Jr., and Edward Anderson. Mr. Wearin was a member of the Malvern business community for a decade from 1917, when he served as cashier and vice president of the Iowa State Savings Bank. He devoted his time to farming and stock raising until 1964 when he was elected chairman of the Mills County Agricultural Adjustment Administration, the Triple A. that was established to improve farm economics that year. He continue to serve as chairman for more than 20 years, helping to guide it and its successor, the ASCS to stabilize farm income during the depression and war years. Mr. Wearin also had a strong sense of civic responsibility. He served on both the Malvern town council and school board. He took a very active part in promoting the building which was constructed in 1924. He was an original member of the South Omaha Bridge commission. He was a trustee of the Fairview County Club holding company. He served as Elder in Malvern Presbyterian Church for many years. He took part in the organization of the Mills County Farm Bureau and was a member for many years. A member of Silver Urn Masonic Lodge he served as its master in 1925 and was given his 50 year certificate in 1957. He was also a member of the Nebraska Scottish Rite and of Tangier Temple of the Shrine. Mr. Wearin traveled extensively throughout the United States, in Canada, and Mexico, indulging his interest farming to study agricultural methods and conditions of which he was a keen observer. His wife Ethel died in 1951. On Janaury 4, 1952, he was married to Jessie Wortman and their home continued to be a hospitable, lively place, welcoming guests and visitors as it had since first established. His death September 25, followed a long illness. He had undergone major surgery at the Edmundson Hospital September 29, and was unable to rally from this. He survived by his wife, Jessie; two sons, Josiah Jr. and Edward and their families, including 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Mansfield Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Clarence Woodland. music was furnished by Mrs. William G. Blackburn, organist. Serving as pall beers were Dr. J. R. Beckwith, Robert Benton, Charles D. Costello, Richard A. Hyde, Lawrence Lisle, Joe Robbins, T. E. Salyers, and Wm. A. Wortman. Honorary pall bearers were James Benton, Harry L. Conrad, Robert tL.Campbell, Otha Dickershach, Chas. Donahue, Tom Gridley, Frederic, G. Newell, and Frederick Smith.
