Description	:	Annie was the daughter of Michael Shea and Mary Sullivan, both Irish immigrants. Mary Sullivan was from Ballingarry, County Limerick. Michael Shea was from County Kerry. Before her marriage, Annie worked in the Hall Brothers woolen mill with her lifelong friends Mame Downing Sullivan and Kate Sample Wheeler. Joanna Teresa Shea never allowed herself to be called Joanna. She preferred Annie and always used it. Joanna Teresa Shea never allowed herself to be called Joanna. She preferred Annie and always used it. She was born in Norwich on October 23, 1885 to stone mason Michael Shea, age 40, and Mary Sullivan, age 38. She is listed as their seventh child. The original record seems to have listed her mother as "Catherine" Sullivan, but this was corrected in 1942 by proof from her brother Pat to the town clerk that their mother's name was Mary. Annie went as far as sixth grade in school. Her family lived at 472 Boswell Ave. in Norwich which was always brimming with relatives. After Annie married, she and her husband and then her daughter continued to live with her siblings at the Boswell Ave. house. Annie’s particular task in the family was sewing. She also did embroidery and tatted lace. Her daughter Mary said she made most of the clothes for the family. She had a sewing machine with a wide deep foot treadle pedal that ran the machine manually. Her husband, Patrick Mumford, was an electrician who after their marriage rigged up a small electric foot pedal for the machine. Annie also did some of the baking, particularly pie crusts, but her sister Kitty’s specialty was the pie fillings. Annie’s daughter Mary said that washing their clothes used to be done in set tubs and would take all day Monday. When watching a DVD called “Older Than Ireland,” Mary agreed with one of the interviewees who said the washing machine was the greatest invention ever. The family's first washing machine was a wringer washer. You would wash the clothes in soapy water in the machine, wring them out, wash in rinse water, wring again and then hang them outside on the line to dry. It went from taking all day to taking a few hours. They had a garden at the Boswell Ave. house where they grew asparagus, green beans and lettuce. The family did not eat salads. The lettuce was for sandwiches. There were also flowers, particularly hollyhocks. And honeysuckle grew on the front porch lattice. Annie and Pat met through a fellow named Joe Sullivan had been dating one of Annie's best friends and introduced Annie to his best friend, Pat Mumford. According to the Norwich Bulletin on April 13, 1915, Anna T. Shea and Patrick Mumford were among those who shared Box 5 at the Knights of Columbus Concert and Ball. About 400 hundred guests enjoyed the 18 numbers on the program. The boxes were covered in yellow and white cheesecloth and the decorations throughout the big drill shed at the armory were in pale yellow, pale blue, and white. Patrick Mumford was a member of the arrangement and reception committee, and he and John H. Carney had done the electrical work, including a large electrical sign with the letters K of C on the blue-and-yellow-draped orchestra balcony. Clusters of American flags were at the corners of the balcony. At the opposite balcony a large portrait of Columbus was displayed in a frame studded with electric lights. “Under the spell of the music, the color and brilliant lights a delightful spirit prevailed…” Annie married Patrick H. Mumford on April 26, 1921. They had one daughter. Annie Mumford fell and broke her hip at age 70. She recovered but later had a stroke or "cerebral contusion”. She died on January 13, 1961. She is buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
