Description	:	Patrick Francis Shea, called Pat or sometimes "P. F." by his family, was born March 1, 1881 to a laborer named Michael Shea, age 40, and Mary Sullivan, age 36. His name was originally recorded as "Michael Shay" but in 1942 he presented his baptismal record to the town clerk and had his name corrected in the town records. His name was originally recorded as "Michael Shay" but in 1942 he presented his baptismal record to the town clerk and had his name corrected in the town records. Patrick graduated from the Greeneville School and the Norwich Free Academy, the only one of his siblings to finish high school. He was a laborer in the Bleachery (the Norwich Bleaching, Dyeing and Printing Co.) in 1900 and was a letter carrier from at least 1904 until a few years before his death. Patrick Francis Shea registered for the draft on September 12, 1918. He lived at 472 Boswell Ave. and was a letter carrier for the post office. He was of medium height and build and had blue eyes and brown hair. According to the Connecticut Military Census, he was 5 feet 6 1/4 inches tall and weighed 155 lbs. On October 12, 1922, Pat married Katherine Murray in St Patrick's Church in Norwich. Her widowed mother, Mrs. Margaret Murray, lived with them for many years at 25 Otis. In 1936, Pat playfully referred to himself as "Shea pere" when he penned a little poem into a copy of "Vermont Beautiful" that he gave his niece Mary for Christmas. Mary's father was from Vermont (whose residents were referred to in the slang of the time as "Apple knockers") and Uncle Pat wrote: This book about "Apple Knockers" Which Santa brings to you Tells how they copy everything That the "Nutmeggers" do. --Shea pere 1936 Nutmeggers, as a nickname for Connecticut people, came from a joke about con artists in Connecticut who would sell wood chips and tell tourists it was expensive nutmeg (sold at an inexpensive price). Patrick F. Shea, living at 25 Otis Street, died after a few weeks of illness on December 1, 1957. The Norwich lodge of Elks and the national association of Letter Carriers Branch 20 were represented at his funeral. His wife, Katherine Murray Shea, died April 2, 1958 in Norwich after one week of illness. They are buried together at St. Joseph Cemetery.
