Shea, called Kitty, was born October 27, 1879 in Norwich to a stone cutter named Michael Shea, age 35, and his wife, Mary Sullivan, age 33. She is listed as "Catherine" Shea in her Norwich birth record where she is recorded as Mary's fourth child. She is also listed as “Catherine” in the 1880 census. She is listed as Katherine Anne Shea in her social security record. As a young woman she worked at least one summer at a resort on Fisher’s Island, New York, off the coast of Connecticut, probably as a waitress. She was a "spooler," at a mill in 1900 living at 472 Boswell Avenue, her father's home. By 1930 “Catherine” was a mill hand in a velvet mill, living on Boswell Ave. with her sisters and brother. Katherine A. Shea, according to the 1936 Norwich Directory, was a stock clerk working at JBM Co., and living at 472 Boswell Ave. Kitty's niece Mary, who grew up at 472 Boswell Ave., remembers that Kitty had an office job at the velvet mill where she spent the day adding long columns of figures. Kitty was fantastic with numbers, and Mary used to get help with her school arithmetic from Kitty. Kitty was one of the mainstays who kept the family afloat during the depression; she had a job that paid $15/week. She liked to read the gossip column of Hedda Hopper and listen to Hopper's radio show. Kitty, according to her niece Mary, traveled on a visit to Montreal, but Mary doesn’t remember if there was a particular reason she chose Montreal. Kitty brought back some postcards as souvenirs – one each from the Windsor Hotel, Montreal; the Mount Royal Hotel, Montreal; and the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal. Kitty remained unmarried, lived at 472 Boswell Avenue until her death and died at home on Christmas Day, December 25, 1955. She is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery with her parents.
