Memorial service and burial were at a later date in Miller, Hand Co., South Dakota at St. Ann's Catholic Church and cemetery. John Anthony Clement was born May 11, 1922, in Grover Hill, Ohio, to Hubert J. and Elizabeth M. (Klausing) Clement. He was baptized at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ottoville, Ohio. At age three, he moved with his parents and family to Hand County, South Dakota. He attended the Catholic school and church at Polo and helped on his family's farm. At about age 20, he moved to Miller, where he worked as a mechanic and later for the electric company, servicing the boilers. In 1945, he married Helen Schmersal at Polo. They moved to Delphos, Ohio, shortly after their marriage, and they lived in Delphos until returning to South Dakota in 1958. From 1958 to 1976, he farmed in Hand and Spink Counties. He and his family then moved to Redfield. During the marriage, five children were born. They were divorced in 1978. In the late 1980s, he moved to Arizona, where he made his last residence in Mesa. Survivors include five children, Dennis (Allayne) of Deadwood, Tim (Wynn) of Iroquois, Richard, DDS (Susan) of Bartlesville, Okla., Jane (Fritz, MD) Laura of Everett, Wash., and Russel (Mary) of El Cajon, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and a great-grandson; a sister, Lenore Venjohn of Miller; three brothers, Hubert (Betty) of Miller, Paul (Clara) of Faulkton, and Louis (Carol) of Orient; two sisters-in-law, Eileen Clement and Minnie Clement, both of Miller; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Valetta Hardes; three brothers, Richard, Bernard and Ernest; a sister-in-law, Marcille Clement; and a brother-in-law, John Venjohn.
