Horn, a well known and excellent citizen of Fairfield township, died at his home six miles northwest of this city Friday morning after an illness of ten days from pneumonia. Mr. Horn was born in Washington county, Penn., July 19th, 1824, and grew to manhood there. He was married in 1846 (sic. August 9, 1847 per Phoebe's obituary) to Miss Phoebe Walton, who survives him, and they were the parents of eight children. Five of these are living, Dr. M. L. Horn at Danville, Ill., Geo. R., John M., Emma B. and Lydia A. in this county. Mr. and Mrs. Horn removed to Iowa in the spring of 1855 and located on a farm in Fairfield township a mile or two from the place on which the husband died and on which they had lived for thirty years. Mr. Horn brought to this work a thorough knowledge of agriculture, and he proved a model farmer. He was a man of energy, of industrious habits, frugal and thrifty, and accumulated a handsome competency from this Iowa farm. With a good education, a wide range of reading, especially on lines which bore directly on his life work, he was a man of more than ordinary intelligence and ability. Possessed of all those elements so essential to good citizenship, he acquired and maintained a prominent place in the life of the community in which so many of his years were spent. In his political beliefs Mr. Horn was an intense republican and protectionist. He held many important positions within the gift of his friends and neighbors, and served his county one term as member of the board of supervisors. His death will be very generally regretted and a wide measure of sympathy will be extended the stricken family. The remains were interred in the City cemetery Sunday afternoon. Rev. M. L. Melick conducted funeral services at the Lutheran church, with which denomination Mr. Horn had been identified since 1846, and they were largely attended. ----------- Fairfield Tribune March 3, 1897 Pg. 6, Col. 1 Death of an Old Resident. Friday, February 26th, at 8:30 a.m., John B. Horn, an old resident of Jefferson county, died of pneumonia after an illness of about three weeks. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. M. L. Melick, at the Lutheran church, of which he has long been a member, Sunday afternoon, and the remains were taken to the Evergreen (sic. Old Fairfield City cemetery) cemetery for burial. John B. Horn was born in Washington county, Penn., July 19th, 1824. His early manhood days were spent in transferring stock across the Alleghany mountains from the west to the eastern market, after which he spent six or seven years in Virginia and Pennsylvania, farming in the summer and teaching school in the winter. During this period he had sickness and death in the family, losing all but his wife and one little boy. Becoming discouraged, he thought to move to the west, coming from Brownsville, Pennsylvania, by water to Keokuk, Iowa, and reaching Fairfield in the spring of the year 1855. He has been a resident of Jefferson county ever since, living for the last thirty years on the farm where he died, and in the immediate neighborhood ever since he came to the state. Mr. Horn was an active, clear headed business man, quick and impulsive in his manner, but full of kindness and generosity. The wanderer and the destitute were never turned from his door empty handed and his home at all times was the seat of hospitality. He died as he lived, an honest man and a gentleman, surrounded by his weeping children, three sons and two daughters. In his last moments his dear wife, who had been such a good helpmate for a period of more than forty-nine years, owing to her serious illness and enfeebled condition, could not be with him. He will be missed, not only by his family, but by society and the community of which he was an honest and respected member. Mr. Horn was a good manager and a good business man and one of our most successful and progressive farmers. Much credit is due him while a member of the board of supervisors of this county for his efficiency and careful and economical management of county affairs. Mr. Horn united with the Evangelical Lutheran church in Pennsylvania fifty-one years ago and has been a consistent member ever since, although not a regular attendant of late years on account of his crippled condition. On his death bed he called his children around him, giving them advice, and telling them to be honest and honorable in their dealing with their fellow men, and to so live that the world might be bettered by their being in it and finally meet their father in heaven.
