Horn, well known resident of Jefferson county passed away this morning at his home, 311 West Broadway St. Although Mr. Horn had been in failing health for some time, the news of his death came as a shock to his many friends. His death occurred at 8:15 a.m. after an extended illness with a heart ailment. Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist church on Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with Dr. M. A. Gable in charge. Mr. Horn was the last member of the pioneer Horn family, well known throughout Jefferson County. Mr. Horn was educated in the public schools and at Parsons college and at the age of nineteen he took up the duties of a teacher in the county schools, a position that he held for ten years. He ranked high as an instructor and was awarded many teaching certificates. On March 2, 1898 he was married to Ada McPherson and soon afterwards purchased the farms near Richland where he owned and operated until his death. In 1921 he moved to Fairfield and purchased the property at 311 Broadway which has been his home continuously since that time. He was elected to the office of County Supervisor and while acting in this capacity was instrumental in organizing the county officials of southeastern Iowa. The organization met every three months and discussed matters relating to their offices. Mr. Horn later became president, a position he held until his retirement from office. While residing in the country he was a member of the Friends church and upon moving to Fairfield Mr. Horn united with the First Methodist church. Here he took an active part in church work. He was a member of the Brotherhood Bible Class and served on the Official Board of the church, attending its meetings and church services as long as his health permitted. Mr. Horn will be remembered as a person always vitally interested in the affairs of the city and county. He was a member of Clinton Masonic Lodge here. He is survived by his wife and two children: Ralph Horn of Davenport and Mrs. Emma Barr of Jacksonville, Ill., and two grandchildren, Robert Milton Horn, and Jo Ann Horn. He was the youngest child of John and Phoebe Horn. The body is at Hoskins Funeral Home. -------------- The Fairfield (Ia.) Daily Ledger Wednesday September 13, 1939 Pg. 3 Col 3 Funeral Services For Late J. M. Horn Held Yesterday Funeral services for the late J. M. Horn were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the First Methodist church, where the body lay in state, preceding the services. The service was opened with the reading of scripture passages and prayer after which a quartet, composed of Mrs. C. M. Graham, Mrs. Frank H. Pierson, Paul Coleson and J. H. Stuckey sang. Mrs. E. G. Linder presided at the organ. Dr. M. A. Gable, pastor of the church, paid a fitting tribute to the memory of Mr. Horn, recalling that he was a man of poise and dignity, interested in his home and family. Also he was deeply interested in the welfare of his community and in his church. Dr. Gable spoke from the subject, "He Wrought Before the Lord" and called attention to the fact that everything which Mr. Horn did, whether for himself, or freely for others, was carefully, and accurately completed. He did his work so that it might be acceptable to the highest authority. Having earlier lived in the north part of the county, Mr. Horn joined the Friends church and was a regular attendant. He must have appreciated the high standards of that church, the speaker said. When he moved to Fairfield in 1921 he attended the First Methodist church and then joined it. He was a member of the Brotherhood Bible class of the church and a very regular attendant, at its meeting and the church services, so long as his health permitted. As an official in the church he was also faithful. Members of Clinton Masonic Lodge No. 15, and also members of the Brotherhood Bible Class, attended the services in a body. Honorary pallbearers were R. P. Thoma, J. H. Montgomery, J. W. Dole, A. K. Harper, Dean Taylor, John Barwise, Ed Rains and Booker Smith. The active pallbearers were LeRoy Williams, Charles Wheatley, Russell Parsons, William W. Simmons, W. P. Starr and John Blair. Interment was in Fairfield Abbey where the services were in charge of the Masonic lodge, with prayer and benediction by Dr. Gable. -------------- Note: About this five-person monument... George Horn and his wife Laura Swan Horn were originally buried at the Fairfield Abbey Mausoleum, as were George's brother John Milton Horn and his daughter Emma Barr Horn. When the Fairfield Abbey was closed in the 1960s these Horn/Barr remains were reburied at Evergreen Cemetery in this plot. Evidently one monument was erected with inscriptions for each of these four reburials. The wife of John Milton Horn was Ada Horn and she died in 1966.
