A remark heard on the street after his death was that if the world had enough people like John Haug the world wouldn't have its troubles? Mr. Haug lived in Nemaha County all of his life. He was born January 4, 1875, a son of August and Katherine Selbach Haug. he married Phenomena Koelzer on January 9, 1900, at the St. Benedict Church, and they celebrated their golden wedding in 1950. Mrs. Haug passed away July 16, 1954. Their children are: Mrs. Ursula Lueger, Seneca; Mrs. Clara Meyer and Lawrence Haug, Baileyville; Pete Haug, Soldier; Mrs. Armella Schmits, Seneca; Ambrose Haug, Holton; and Melvin Haug, Seneca. Brothers and sisters of Mr. Huag are: Ed, Tony, Charles and Bill Haug, Seneca; Fred Haug and Mrs. Rosa McCaffery, Baileyville; and Mrs. Anna Grothjan of Salina. The deceased brothers and sisters are: Mrs. Ida McQuaid, Katherine Haug; August, Joe, Barney and Monroe Haug. Mr. Haug farmed for many years. He was ill for several months preceding his death, but critically so for only a few days. He was a strong family man, a good neighbor, and much interested in his life's work of farming and in livestock. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul's Church, the St. Joseph's Sodality and of the Knights of Columbus. The Solemn Requiem Mass at St. Mary's Church Tuesday was celebrated by Fr. Leander, with Fr. Basil and Fr. Edward assisting. Honorary pallbearers were former neighbors of the farm where he had spent most of his years: Henry Wichman, Kenneth Haug, Harry Burger, Walter Rottinghaus, George Steinmeier and Emil Hulsing.
