Umbenhower, third son of Isaiah and Matilda Umbenhower, was born in Champaign county, Illinois, on Nov. 14, 1860, and departed this life Jan. 31, 1937, at the age of 76 years, 2 months and 17 days. He was united in marriage to Martha J. Pelton, Feb. 9, 1882, and had his life been spared nine days, he and the bride of his youth would have trodden life's pathway together, both through joy and sorrow, for the seldom attained number of 55 years. Six children were born to this union, Mrs. Bessie Hall of Pleasantville; Mrs. Stella Lenig of Columbia; Mrs. Alverda Harger and Nelson Umbenhower of Newton; Mrs. Gladys Storm and Mrs. Sabra McMannis of Purdy. He also leaves 34 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren and two brothers, W. A. Umbenhower and A. Y. Umbenhower, of near Chariton. One brother, Anthony, and one sister, Mrs. Susan Chambers, preceded him in death. Soon after establishing his home in Lucas county, Iowa, deceased was converted and united with the Coal Glen church and though unable to attend in later years, remained a member of the church. He had been in failing health for some time, but the last two months of life was a time of great pain and suffering, which he bore uncomplainingly and often spoke of the time when he would lay aside all earthly cares for that "Place of Great Promise." Most of his life has been spent in this community and a fitting monument to his memory will be the sympathy and understanding extended to those left bereft, by the large circle of friends and neighbors who were permitted to know and call him "Friend." Funeral services were held at the Coal Glen church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Robert Bingaman, and burial was in the cemetery at that place. Obituary courtesy of Charles M.
