Obituary from "Ottumwa Courier," January 15, 1945: Life-Long Resident Of County Is Dead John Dimmitt, 87, a life-long resident of Wapello County, died at his home 414 West Maple Avenue, at 4:10 a.m. Sunday. He had been in failing health for the past three years. A well-known farmer residing on a farm five and one-half miles northeast of Ottumwa, Mr. Dimmitt retired in 1917, moving to Ottumwa, where he had made his home ever since. He was born in Wapello County June 11, 1857, the son of William M. and Matilda Dimmitt. Surviving are his wife, Maggie, and four sons, William W. Dimmitt, Limon, Colo.; Carl L. Dimmitt, Ottumwa Route 1; Jesse G. Dimmitt, Ottumwa, and Forrest B. Dimmitt, Hedrick. Eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive. Other survivors include a brother Fred Dimmitt, and two sisters, Mrs. Filina [sic] Giltner and Mrs. Mary Long, all of Ottumwa. Preceding him in death were a son, Guy C. Dimmitt, who died in 1904, and a daughter, who died in infancy. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Community Funeral Service Chapel in charge of the Rev. Theodore Leonard, pastor of the First Methodist Church. Burial will be made in the Ottumwa Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Noble Dimmitt, Earl Dimmitt, Glenn Dimmitt, Rex Dimmitt, Roy Dimmitt and Ernest Dimmitt. Note: The correct spelling of John's sister is Filana Giltner.
