Born in Maroa, Ill., in 1862, Mr. John Duncan spent his boyhood in that state. He was graduated from Bunker Hill military academy, Illinois. In 1887 he came to Kansas, going first to Everest, where he was a telegraph operator. Later that same year he went to Shannon, where he was a telegraph operator, but he was a ambitious, and got into the grain business. In 1900 he built an elevator, which he owned at the time of his death. In 1907 he decided to become a merchant and bought a store, which burned in 1915, when Mrs. Duncan erected the present store building in Shannon, and the firm, a very prosperous one, is know as Duncan & Son. His son, John being his partner. In 1890 Mr. Duncan was married to Miss Margaret Clark, who survives him. The marriage was a happy one and five children were born of this union: John, Catherine, Margart, Bernadette and Dorothy, the youngest. John Duncan lived a successful life. A smart, capable business man, he kept his family in comfort: and being gentle and kind made his family happy. He was an educatd, interesting man. Men liked to talk with him. Mr. Hart was a visitor to our city Tuesday evening, and has gained quite a reputation as an architect, and in drawing plans and specifications.
