Omaha Daily Bee, October 31, 1897: Council Bluffs News - John Fair died yesterday at his home on Harmony street after an illness of several years from consumption. Mr. Fair was one of the pioneer citizens of the city and has been identified with its substantial progress for nearly half a century. He was born in Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, December 17, 1820. He leaves a wife and three sons to mourn his death. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 2 p.m. Sunday, Rev. Litherland of the Second Presbyterian church officiating. Burial at Walnut Hill cemetery. Omaha Daily Bee, November 1, 1897: Council Bluffs News - The funeral of the late John Fair occurred yesterday afternoon from the residence on Harmony street. It was largely attended, many of the old citizens of the city being present. The services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Litherland of the Second Presbyterian church - the little church that Mr. Fair helped to found a number of years ago. Mr. Fair was born in Pennsylvania in 1820. He came to Iowa in 1844, and located in Burlington, which was then the territorial capital. He remained there for many years. In 1847 he was married there to Miss Lucy M. Chase. In 1864 Mr. Fair and his family came to Council Bluffs, purchased a tract of land and built a number of houses, among them the home where he died. Three sons, Robert, Cameron and Charles, survive him.
