Patterson. Well Known Resident of Chouteau County Passes Away in California A telegram from San Diego, California, announces that John F. Patterson, who recently went to that locality in search of health, died Tuesday afternoon from consumption. News of the serious condition of the patient was received by his relatives a few days ago and they were prepared in some measure for the announcement that his sickness had a fatal termination. Until about three years ago Mr. Patterson enjoyed unusually good health, not having been afflicted with sickness of any kind, but he contracted pneumonia while on a trip to the Marias country in the spring of 1902, and since that time consumption had been gradually destroying his rugged constitution. He left here for the Pacific coast about three months ago, his physician advising a lower altitude might check the progress of the disease, but the change failed to effect the result desired. Mr. Patterson had a large acquaintance throughout northern Montana, and enjoyed the esteem and respect of his neighbors and friends. He was born in Maryland some 44 years ago, and came to this locality in the spring of 1880. He engaged in the sheep business soon after arriving here and made a success of that enterprise, his ranch property and improvements on the Shonkin being considered one of the best plants in northern Montana. He was also interested to some extent in the cattle business, and has stayed with the livestock industry through its ups and downs of the past twenty-five years. During his residence in northern Montana, Mr. Patterson filled several public positions of trust and responsibility. For several years he was sheep inspector for this district and under the direction of the state veterinarian assisted in enforcing quarantine regulations affecting diseased flocks in northern Montana. He served one term as a member of the board of Chouteau county commissioners, and was also representative from this county in the legislature of some four years ago. In each of these positions he proved himself worthy of the confidence of his constituents. In the spring of 1892 Mr. Patterson was married to Miss Edith Buck, of Minnesota, and three children have been the issue of the marriage. To these and other relatives will be extended the sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends over their sad bereavement.
