His life's story is simply told, but it does not impart the full measure of influence of his goodness and sincerity in a busy world. John James, son of Richard and Mary James, was born in Herferdshire, England, May 6, 1868, and departed this life Thursday, Sept. 8, 1938 at the age of seventy years, four months and two days. He was the second child in a family of eight. When two years old he came with his parents to Kansas in the year 1870, and has lived in Exeter township these sixty-eight years, with the exception of three. On September 18, 1895, he was united in marriage to Mary Evans. To this union eight children were born. Mr. James was a devoted husband and father, neighbor and friend. His wife, children and grandchildren hardly know how to go on without him. Nothing was too much for him to do for them when they were well and in time of sickness and trouble he was always at their side. There was a close bond between Mr. James and his sisters and brothers, also others of the family circle and all of the relatives. Mr. James was preceded in death by his parents, and two sons, Emmitt and Clinton James. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Mrs. Mary James, four sons, Dean, Ira, Clifford and Elmo of Clay Center two daughters Dorothy of the home and Leola of Topeka; twenty-six grandchildren, four sisters, Mrs. Aliee Macy of Miltonvale, Mrs. Hattie Ford of Oak Hill, Mrs. Emma Craig and Mrs. Mary Spark of Clay Center, and three brothers, Newt James of Oak Hill, Bert James of Ladysmith and Will James of clay Center, and with these a host of relatives and friends. Truly it can be said, "Life is like a ship at sea, a moment together then out into the deep." While Mr. James had not been in the best of health for several years, he never gave up and was always busy doing the work that was his to do. When members of his family became ill, or needed help, he was ever ready to go to their assistance. If sickness or trouble came to any of them, they knew instantly that he would do everything he could for them. Last Thursday afternoon Mr. James suffered a heart attack while he was busy with his fall farm work. A grandson, who was working in a field nearby, noticed the team standing outside the barn for some time, at the James home in the Ladysmith vicinity. Feeling that something was wrong, he went to look for his grandfather and found him in the barn dead. Mrs. James and daughters who were shopping in Clay Center, and other members of the family were summoned and they hurried home, but death had claimed their companion and father. A very large crowd gathered at Bethany Chapel, Mrs. James'home church, Sunday morning at 10 o'clock to pay their tribute of respect to the deceased and express their sympathy to the bereaved. The sympathizing friends, the beautiful flowers, the songs so sweetly sung by the mixed quartet, with God's promise, "My grace is sufficient for thee" were graciously comforting to the loved ones. The funeral service was in charge of Rev. E. A. Coates of Topeka, a former pastor, and Rev. W. M. Millard the resident pastor. Interment was made in the Wesleyan Cemetery where his parents and sons were laid before him.
