Description	:	Richard James, was born at Lady Meadow Farm, Hereforshire, England, August 11, 1843, and died at his home in Clay Center, Kansas, on the 2nd day of March, 1920, aged 76 years 6 months and 21 days. He was married to Mary Jane Dean, at Truxton Church, in 1865, the Rev. Jacobson, officiating. Read More	Richard James, was born at Lady Meadow Farm, Hereforshire, England, August 11, 1843, and died at his home in Clay Center, Kansas, on the 2nd day of March, 1920, aged 76 years 6 months and 21 days. He was married to Mary Jane Dean, at Truxton Church, in 1865, the Rev. Jacobson, officiating. To this union eight children were born, William, John, Albert and Newton James and Mrs. Alice Macy, Mrs. Emma Craig, Mrs. Hattie Ford and Mrs. Mary Sparks, all of whom survive him and were present during his last illness. He came to Kansas in 1870 and settled on his homestead in Athelstone Township the next year where he lived until 1904, when he left the farm and moved to Clay Center. He was converted under the ministry of the Rev. Wolpert, at the South Exter Schoolhouse in 1876, and united with the M. E. Church. Two years later he became a charter member of the Wesleyan Society organized by the Rev. J. T. Kiggins, and now known as the Bethany Chapel Class. For nearly a half century he was an active member of the church and a consistent Christian. He attended religious services regularly when his health would permit and greatly enjoyed the prayer service and class meeting. He was a man, "Diligent in business, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord." He had been in poor health for several years, and his death was the result of various complications and a general breaking up of the vital forces. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife, four sisters, Mrs. R. Lloyd of Clay Center; Mrs. Mary Ann Griffiths; Mrs. Elizabeth Ann George and Mrs. Julia Frances Brown, of England; eight children; fifty grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; nephews, nieces and a large circle of devoted friends. A short service was held at the James' home, Friday, noon and funeral services were held at Bethany Chapel at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. W. Carpenter assisted by Revs. Will Smith and J. C. Mayos. The floral offerings were beautiful tokens of respect and love for the deceased. Written by T. Ford
