Read More	****************************************** John Gerk Jr. August 16, 1925 - September 21, 2015 Resident of Richmond, CA John Gerk Jr passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 90 on September 21, 2015. John was born on August 16, 1925 to Kathryn and John Gerk Sr. John was born in Iliff, Colorado, one of ten children. Always a faithful and devout Catholic to his final hours. He touched so many lives over his 90 years with his amazing love, faith and generous heart. He led by example, giving his time and devotion to family, church, Richmond Community and the nation. He served in the Navy and Marine Corps during WWII and the Korean War as a Hospital Corpsman Third Class. He was so proud to serve in both the Navy aboard the LST 488 and the Marine Corp. After serving in World War II he moved back to Colorado where he met an married Shirley Ann Clark November 24, 1949. He was called back to serve in the Korean War, he then moved to Richmond, California with his wife Shirley Gerk and young son Thomas Gerk . They made their home in Richmond, California where they raised their nine children. He worked numerous jobs including Richmond Export and Safeway Warehouse where he retired after 31 years. His faith in God was an inspiration to many. He served his faith community with Our Lady of Mercy Church in Point Richmond, giving unselfishly of his life, and devotion for over 62 years. He led many efforts to keep our church flourishing, including reading at masses, fundraising efforts including yearly BBQ's, pancake breakfasts and more with Shirley Gerk, his entire family and many friends. He was happiest attending mass there every Saturday evening and the greetings he received from his special friends "Anna" Cynthia and Lorraine, who always made sure to give him a hug and made him feel loved and special. He always thanked Father David at the end of each mass, up until his last mass. He is a founding member of the Atchison Village Mutual Homes Corporation (AVMHC), He also served as a Richmond CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) Member, recently receiving a award from the Governors Office for his dedication and continued support of Richmond CERT Program. He is survived by his Sister Josephine Kreitzer, brother Raymond Gerk, Children; Thomas Gerk (Amparo), daughters Kathryn Gerk, Sharon Gerk, Karen Todd (Bill), Teresa Gerk, 19 Grandchildren; 34 Great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and sisters, his wife of 60 years Shirley Gerk, sons David, Tim, Pat and Tony. The family wishes to thank the many caring people that went above and beyond with compassion, love and care for Dad's in his final years, including family friends, caregivers, Dr. Gregory Lee at Kaiser Hospital Richmond, and Vitas Hospice. The family invites all to a Celebration of his amazing life on Thursday September 24, 2015 at 11:00 am beginning with mass at Our Lady of Mercy Church at 301 West Richmond Avenue, Point Richmond, with lunch immediately following downstairs.
