He attended the village school and then learned the trade of blacksmithing. His family emigrated to the United States in 1848 when he was 19 years old. They settled on a farm at Hunt's Corners, Lyme Twp., Huron Co., Ohio. In 1851, John Henry and two companions set out for California to join the Gold Rush. As they were crossing the Isthmus of Panama, their trunks and other possessions were stolen. As the story is told, they resumed their voyage with only "two barley loaves and a gallon of brandy." Upon arriving in San Francisco, their bad luck continued. Thanks to the aid of a Good Samaritan, they did make their way to Sacramento where John Henry worked at teaming, blacksmithing and gold mining. In 1855 he returned to Ohio and bought a 190 acre farm north of Hunt's Corners with gold he had mined. On August 20 of that same year, he married Katharina Scheid, and they soon started their family. In all, they would have 15 children. In 1868 they moved to Brownhelm Hollow on the Vermilion River, Lorain Co., Ohio, where he engaged in a flour mill and a saw mill. After the flour mill burned in 1876, he replaced it with a modern one, but in 1879, the family returned to the farm near Hunt's Corners. Katharina then died in 1882. John Henry married second Johannette Elizabeth Heimann, a cousin. Four children were born to this union. In 1886 they relocated to a 320 acre ranch of prairie sod near DeGraff, Butler Co., Kansas, with no structures. Soon, however, they were comfortably situated, and John Henry began raising race horses. This was not successful, but breeding sheep turned out to be a better proposition. At the time of his death, John Henry owned 960 acres which he had improved. It is said that John Henry was "a true Christian and a friend to humanity. Never a hungry tramp was turned from his door."
