Read More	Links to parents sent by Donna Jones (46931362) *********************** Glasco Sun, Aug. 19, 1910, page 3: Obituary John Samuel Grau was born November 27, 1847, near Lancaster, Penn., and died August 11, 1910 at Glasco, Kans. His parents came from Germany and were pious people, who loved and served the Lord, and brought their children up in the church. He was baptized in infancy in the Evangelical Lutheran church, of which his parents were members. When he was about five years old they moved to Long Green, Baltimore County, Maryland, near the city of Baltimore. He was confirmed at the age of 16, on March 29, 1863, in the Evangelical Lutheran church, St. Mathias, at Baltimore, and stayed at Long Green until he was 23 years old. In the spring of 1871, he left home for Kansas, and arrived at Wamego, staying there until October, and then started for the Solomon valley, bought a farm near Asherville, and lived there until the spring of 1872, when he went to Phillips county where he homesteaded. He stayed there one year and then moved back on his place in Mitchell county. He was married to Louisa Horn, of Glasco, Kans., June 24, 1896, to which union was born two daughters, Elizabeth and Elma. While living in Asherville, Brother Grau joined the Evangelical Lutheran church at Beloit, of which he had been a very loyal and faithful member. He helped build said church and took a very active part in building up the congregation. He was a member of the church council for 12 years and Superintendent of the Sunday school for ten years. In the fall of 1902 he and his family moved to Glasco, Kansas, where he stayed the remainder of his days. As said of his work at Beloit, we can say of his work in Glasco, that he was one of its most loyal members. He was always looking out for the building up of the kingdom of Heaven. While here, he was elected three times on the church council and was Superintendent of our Sunday school for six years. We lose in him one of our best workers in the church, a noble Christian, whose only desire was to serve his Master and be of some service to his fellow men. We feel sad of heart when we think of the vacant place that is now in his home, in the Sunday school and the church. His wife, two daughters, two brothers, a sister, one brother and the sister living in Maryland, who were unable to attend the funeral, and other relatives and numerous friends mourn over the great loss. He died from kidney trouble after a long and severe illness at the last. He fell peacefully asleep at 9:55 a.m. last Thursday, at the age of 62 years, 8 mos., and 15 days. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church in Glasco, Rev. Jensen conducting them, and interment was made in the beautiful cemetery at Glasco. Those who attended the funeral from out of town were Henry Deschner, Chas. Clark and wife and Joseph Grau, wife and two sons of Asherville; Robert Quinn and wife and Mrs. Fred Reinhardt, of Bennington; Geo.Leinen and wife of Glen Elder; Mr. Berneking, wife and daughter, Lydia, Fred Dimanowski, wife and two daughter, Irene and Esther, of Simpson, and Dan Coch and wife of Beloit.
