Read More	------------------------- JOHN WINELAND DEAD Aged Pioneer, Civil War Veteran and "Forty-Niner Passed Away Last Friday John Wineland, who was doubtless the oldest man in Osborne County, a pioneer settler of 1874, a veteran of the Civil war and a participant in the pilgrimage across the cotinent on the Oregon trail in the days of gold fever in California in 1849, passed away at his home in this city last Friday at the advanced age of 93. Mr. Wineland suffered a stroke of apoplexy eleven years ago and since that time he has been a confirmed invalid. His wonderful vitality, gained during the hardships of pioneer days, stood him in good stead during these trying years, and his valiant spirit fought on against the infirmities that had overtaken him until he nearly reached 94 years of age. John Wineland was born June 2, 1832, in Richland county, Ohio, being one of a family of twelve children. He died in his home in Osborne, February 19, 1926, having lived almost 94 years. Because of his long life, the incidents of his career are of peculiar interest to this generation. At the age of nineteen he moved from Ohio to Iowa, where he learned and worked at the shoemakers trade for some time. He caught the gold fever along with others and started the long journey west on horseback. He soon encountered another riding a horse west and they put the team together and drove over the Oregon Trail to Salt Lake City, Utah. Here Mr. Wineland became acquainted with Brigham Young, president of the Morman church, and was present at the laying of the cornerstone of the wonderful Mormon Temple. The stone contained Mr. Wineland's name with many others as every person making their home in Salt Lake at that time was compelled to be a Mormon. From Salt Lake he helped drive some cattle to Stockton, California, by the way of the Humboldt River. From there he went to San Francisco and then, by chance meeting with an old acquaintance, they went to Oregon and joined a force fighting Indians for six months. Some time after this, the Indians stole Mr. Winelands cattle and he entered the mining business, first as a worker in the mine and then as owner. He sold his interest in the mine for 3,000, which he invested in another mine which proved to be worthless. Again by working and saving he accumulated enough money to take him back to Ohio by way of Panama and New York City. Shortly after arriving home the Civil War broke out and he enlisted in Co. E. 23rd Iowa, at the age of 29 years. During his service he was injured by an ambulance and was given an honorable discharge on February 27, 1863. He emigrated to Jewel county, Kansas, in 1870 with his wife, having married Miss Jane Pearse, January 29, 1859. They moved to Osborne county in 1874. To This union were born seven children, who survive their parents. Mrs. Wineland died October 27, 1918. The children are William M., of Covert; Lafayette and Arthur of Alton; Mrs. Ollie Fruit, of Waldo: Clinton of Natoma; Clay of Wallace, Nebraska, and George of Osborne, who has cared for his father for the past eleven years, Mr. Wineland being an invalid, caused by a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Wineland was a member of O. M. Mitchell Post G. A. R.. He was a patient and uncomplaining sufferer, but death was a welcome visitor to him, as he often expressed the wish he might be taken. And thus another valiant soldier, staunch citizen and rugged pioneer of the days that tried men's souls, has passed to his reward. Funeral services were held at the home on Tuesday, February 23, at 11 o'clock, conducted by Rev. L. F. Arend of the Methodist church, and burial was made by the side of his wife in Kill Creek cemetery. He also has his face engraved in the Osborne County Court House. The story was that he watched and talked to the builders of the court house. One of the workers told him if he didn't stop bugging them, he would carve his face in the building. He kept coming and his face is carved in the court house.
